The design of large-scale engineered systems relies on the extensive use of models. Although there are few papers that study design review practices, we did not find any on model-based design reviews. Thus, we undertook a survey to collect current practices and challenges. We found that reviews are mainly synchronous co-located or remote meetings that involve various profiles who need to access and share models, but that they pragmatically give them up and prefer to comment on PowerPoint-like slides containing screenshots of models except when the meeting gathers only experts in model-based design.

The horticultural industry is an important source of invasive ornamental plant species, which is part of the motivation for an increased emphasis on using native alternatives. We were interested in the possibility that plants marketed in the midwestern United States as the native Celastrus scandens, or American bittersweet, were actually the difficult-to-distinguish invasive Celastrus orbiculatus (oriental bittersweet) or hybrids of the two species. We used nuclear microsatellite DNA loci to compare the genetic identities of 34 plants from 11 vendors with reference plants from wild populations of known species identity. We found that 18 samples (53%) were mislabeled, and 7 of the 11 vendors sold mislabeled plants. Mislabeled plants were more likely to be purchased through Internet or phone order shipments and were significantly less expensive than accurately labeled plants. Vendors marketed mislabeled plants under five different cultivar names, as well as unnamed strains. Additionally, the most common native cultivar, ‘Autumn Revolution,’ displays reproductive characteristics that diverge from the typical C. scandens, which could be of some concern. The lower price and abundance of mislabeled invasive plants introduces incentives for consumers to unknowingly contribute to the spread of C. orbiculatus. Revealing the potential sources of C. orbiculatus is critical for controlling further spread of the invasive vine and limiting its impact on C. scandens populations.

Competitive interactions between native plants and nonnative, invasive plant species have been extensively studied; however, within degraded landscapes, the effect of interspecific interactions among invasive plants is less explored. We investigated a competitive interaction between two sympatric, invasive mustard species that have similar life history strategies and growth forms: garlic mustard and damesrocket. Greenhouse experiments using a full range of reciprocal density ratios were conducted to investigate interspecific competition. Garlic mustard had a negative effect on the final biomass, number of leaves, and relative growth rate in height of damesrocket. Survival of damesrocket was not negatively affected by interspecific competition with garlic mustard; however, garlic mustard showed higher mortality because of intraspecific competition. These results indicated that although garlic mustard has been observed to be the dominant species in this landscape, it may not completely outcompete damesrocket in all situations. Studies of invasive species in competition are important in degraded landscapes because this is the common situation in many natural areas.

Owing to the development of new ion source technology, users of focused ion beams (FIBs) have access to superior performance when compared with the industry standard Ga+ liquid metal ion source. FIBs equipped with an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) ion source are better able to carry out large volume milling applications by providing up to 2 µA of Xe+ ions focused into a sub-5 µm spot. However, ICP FIBs are presently limited to 25 nm imaging resolution at 1 pA.The gas field ionization source (GFIS) relies upon an ion source that is the size of a single atom and correspondingly gains high brightness through its very small source size. The high brightness allows the GFIS to produce a very small focused probe size (<0.35 nm for helium), but with comparatively small beam currents (less than 2 pA). The Cs+ low temperature ion source, still being developed, has a projected sub-nm focal spot size at 1 pA, a maximum current of several nanoamps, and has the potential to offer integrated secondary ion mass spectrometry capabilities.

The present work reports the covalent functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by ferrocene derivatives with polyethyleneglycol linkers. A very clean initial sample was chosen to avoid any residual catalyst and carbon impurities. Functionalized SWCNTs (f-CNTs) are deposited on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and this modified electrode is used for oxidizing the cofactor NADH (dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) in the presence of diaphorase. A clear electrocatalytic effect is evidenced, which can only be attributed to the f-CNTs.

Summary
Children's peer relations play an important role in their psychological, academic, and social development. Although peers offer many positive benefits, such as friendships and opportunities to enact and receive prosocial behavior, on occasion, they are the source of harmful influences that result in immediate hurt feelings as well as short- and long-term negative consequences. One of the more salient aspects of peer relations is the occurrence of aggression. Immediate consequences of this aggression include fear, sadness, humiliation, and diminished self-concept for the victim; in contrast, the aggressors often experience immediate positive affect (happiness, feeling powerful) from the aggression itself or the rewards it brings. This does not imply that the hurtfulness of childhood aggression is one-sided, however. Moving beyond the immediate affect in aggressive encounters, we next review evidence that these acts of aggression have negative psychological, academic, and social consequences for both the aggressors and victims. Consistent with the theme of this book, we then turn our focus to the dyadic relationships between aggressors and victims. In this chapter we describe the conceptual, empirical, and theoretical support for this relationship perspective and then review research showing that certain aggressor–victim relationships are especially hurtful. Given that this relationship approach to studying aggression is relatively novel, we conclude with a discussion of its opportunities and challenges and a call for future research.

As we have recently shown that GABA should be considered a putative neurotransmitter in Schistosoma mansoni, the present work aimed to search for GABAA receptors in adult worms using [3H]-flunitrazepam to label the allosteric benzodiazepine binding site which is classically present on GABAA receptor complexes. We detected a large population (Bmax=8·25±1·1 pmol . mg protein−1) of high affinity (Kd=33·6±1·5 nm) binding sites for flunitrazepam. These sites harboured a singular pharmacological modulation that does not fit well with a mammalian central benzodiazepine receptor, mainly due to a very high affinity for Ro5-4864 and a very low affinity for clonazepam. We also detected a second population of benzodiazepine binding sites labelled with high affinity (IC50=85 nm) by [3H]-PK11195, a selective ligand of the mammalian peripheral benzodiazepine receptor. In conclusion, this work describes the pharmacological properties of a large population of central-like benzodiazepine receptors supporting their study as putative new targets for the development of anti-parasitic agents. We also describe, for the first time, the presence of peripheral benzodiazepine receptors in this parasite.

An outbreak of influenza A occurred in a prison system in New South Wales, Australia in January 2003 during the southern hemisphere summer. This report documents only the third confirmed outbreak of influenza in a prison environment. The outbreak investigation included case ascertainment, state-wide surveillance, a case-control study and interventions to limit the outbreak such as infection control, quarantine, cohorting of cases, and the use of antiviral medication for prophylaxis. A total of 37 clinical cases were identified. Influenza A virus was detected in 11 of the 22 respiratory tract specimens collected. The virus was typed as an influenza A/Fujian/411/2002 (H3N2)-like virus. This strain subsequently became the predominant virus strain during the northern hemisphere winter and the following 2003 Australian southern hemisphere winter influenza season.

We present the more relevant results of various cationic substitutions in the RuSr2GdCu2O8 (Ru-1:2:1:2 ) compound. The substitutions were synthesized by solid-state reaction at ambient pressure in the following systems: Ru1−xSr2GdCu2+xO8 (0.0 < x < 1.0), Ru(Sr2-xCax)GdCu2O8 (0 < x < 2.0) and RuSr2(Gd1-xLnx)Cu2O8 (0 < x < 0.9) with Ln = Dy, Ho, Er, Yb and Lu. All of them were isostructural to Ru-1:2:1:2 compound with tetragonal unit cells. The phases have been characterized by X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD), observing a solid solution (ss ) up to x = 0.4 for Ru ions replaced by Cu ions, x = 0.1 when we substitute Sr atoms by Ca atoms, and x = 0.7 changing Gd ions by Ln ions. As a result of the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), the grain sizes were discovered to be 1 – 10 μm. The Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis permitted us to analyze the impurities that we did not detect with XRD. We observed semiconducting, isolated and ferromagnetic behaviors. No superconducting transition could be observed for these ambient preparation conditions.

The purpose of this study was to differentiate between the effects of the amount and the type of dietary lipids on the expression of the retinoic acid receptor (RAR), but also the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) and the receptor of the 9-cis retinoic acid (retinoid X receptor (RXR)) in rat liver. Six groups of eight rats (5-weeks old) were fed during 4 weeks on the following diets: control 50 g vegetable oil/kg, high-fat diet 250 g vegetable oil/kg. These oils were either coconut oil (rich in saturated fatty acids) or olive oil (rich in monounsaturated fatty acids) or safflower oil (rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly as n-6). The three high-fat diets induced a significant decrease of the maximal binding capacity of RAR and of the abundance of RARβ mRNA. Simultaneously, an increased expression of PPARα mRNA was observed while no significant difference on abundance of RXRα mRNA was observed. The mechanisms involved are probably multiple, but one hypothesis is that a modification of the equilibrium between the nuclear receptors, resulting from an increased expression of PPAR, induces a decreased expression of RAR in rat liver.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas' disease, exhibits considerable biological variability. Moreover, it has been postulated that populations of this protozoan are subdivided into natural clones, which can be separated from each other by considerable levels of evolutionary divergence. The authors have proposed that this long-term clonal evolution may have a profound impact on Trypanosoma cruzi biological diversity. In order to test this hypothesis, 16 T. cruzi stocks representing 3 major clonal genotypes of the parasite were analysed for 8 different in vitro biological parameters. The overall results show a strong statistical linkage between genetic and biological differences. This is in agreement with the working hypothesis, although a notable biological variability is observable among the stocks of each of the 3 major clonal genotypes. The authors propose that T. cruzi genetic variability must be taken into account in any applied study dealing with this parasite.

Well resolved band-edge luminescence of excitons in silicon-germanium alloy strained layers, quantum wells, and superlattices has been observed in films grown by Rapid Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition. The signal is due to bound excitons at low temperatures and free excitons at higher temperatures, and has a strong no-phonon signal which is caused by alloy scattering. Bandgaps inferred from photoluminescence agree well with those measured by absorption spectroscopy, inferring that a no-phonon process dominates the band-edge absorption.
